So, I had this discussion with some other designers a little while ago (very talented ones, i might add) and they all pretty much confirmed the fact that designing one’s own portfolio is about the hardest thing in the world for a designer to do.
We just spend so much time making other people look good, the last thing we have creative capacity for is looking in the mirror and narcissistic self branding. Personally, I would rather get my teeth pulled out than work on my portfolio… I even considered outsourcing it, god forbid…
I finally decided that I would settle for a simple wordpress blog.
I know, it’s not exactly the most visually stimulating solution to show off one’s design portfolio, but my final decision was based on the fact that in addition to just showing off my design work, I really wanted to use my site as more of platform for presenting and sharing knowledge. A place to share the huge mish mash of useful information I have scooped up over my last 10 years in design and marketing instead of just solely for my skills as a Photoshop monkey.
After all, we’re all knee deep in the world of Web 2.0 (or even beyond at this point) aren’t we? And, since sharing, networking and interacting is what it’s all about these days, I think I should get on it and practice what I preach.
With that said, if indeed you are actually reading this (hi mom…) I encourage you to check back on a regular basis as I have a lot of information on the way and will be posting articles on various related subjects on a regular basis. More importantly, I also encourage you to get involved, comment and share opinions and information.
See you soon,
- Sean Earley
